Never mind what The Devil Wears Prada tells us – you don’t need to spend a month’s worth of rent on a single pair of shoes. For that much money you should be able to buy several pairs of shoes, get a massage and take a weekend road trip with friends. Right?
We are judged on how we look
Every woman needs to have a mean shoe game and clothes to match because whether we care to admit it or not women are often judged by the way we look. Yes it’s shallow and no it shouldn’t be that way. Yes we should be judged based on our personalities and intelligence, but unfortunately it doesn’t always work out that way.
I truly believe you never get a second chance to make a good first impression – especially at the office. That’s why it’s important to invest in work wardrobe essentials, a wardrobe that will help you succeed. You’ll need to spend some cash, but not a lot because I’m going to show you how to do it on a dime. If you usually don’t spend money on yourself just think of it as a long term investment in your career.
A new wardrobe doesn’t have to be expensive
The key to a successful work wardrobe is to have a few staple pieces that you can wear all year round and mix and match with other pieces based on your mood and destination.
One of the best ways to save big when shopping is to buy at thrift shops and discount stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls. You may remember this amazing top that I found at a ladies clothing store in Brooklyn back in the Fall.
Truth be told I’m a big Marshalls fan, I purchased a pair of black ballerina flats at Marshalls in Harlem on 125th Street for $14.99 and a year later I still have them.
Here are three work wardrobe essentials you can buy for under $40:
I would much rather take a vacation than buy one pair of name brand shoes. Investing in a pair of shoes that match with pants, skirts and dresses is a good investments. Black pumps are a work wardrobe essential, but beige shoes can work too.
H&M has good quality accessories at reasonable prices. The shoes pictured above are only $29.99, that’s not a bad deal.
A pencil skirt is both sassy and classy
Although I’m not 21 anymore, far from it, I still shop at Forever 21 because they have low prices for not so bad quality products. The skirt pictured above is only $7.90 and it’s a cotton blend so it will be comfortable.
A day to night bag for everything you need
Payless may be known for shoes, but they also have accessories that aren’t too shabby – especially when they’re on sale. The bag pictured above is on sale for $9.99 from $34.99. It’s the perfect size to go from the office to dinner and there’s room to fit everything you need for the day and night – and even overnight if the evening goes well.
Total cost of all these work wardrobe essentials: $47.88
